- Keen Games: "In idle state the server process uses ~4.4GB of physical RAM. Each player needs up to 100MB of additional RAM. In total the server should not use more than 6GB of physical RAM."
- WinterNode: "1-2 players: 4GB. 3-4: 6-8GB. 5-8: 8-10GB. 9-12: 10-12GB. 13-16: 12-16GB. A server that ran fine on 6GB during the first few sessions may start feeling tight after 20+ hours of play."
- XGamingServer: "1-2 players: 6 GB. 3-4 players: 8 GB. 5-8 players: 10 GB. 9-12 players: 12 GB. 13-16 players: 16 GB."

Pending
- 24 hours idle
- One player for 30 minutes
- Three warm restarts
Reported by others
- WinterNode: Memory grows as players explore and change terrain; a modded server "typically idles 1-2GB higher than vanilla".

Docker setup
5 steps
Wine image
Debian 13's own Wine 10 package reaches HostOnline. No Proton, no extra libraries.
printf 'FROM debian:trixie-slim\nRUN dpkg --add-architecture i386 && apt-get update && apt-get install -y --no-install-recommends wine wine64 ca-certificates && rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/* && useradd -m -u 1000 game\nUSER game\nENV HOME=/home/game WINEPREFIX=/home/game/.wine WINEDEBUG=-all WINEARCH=win64\n' | docker build -t wine_runtime -Download
Free anonymous download, Steam app 2278520, about 8.4 GB on disk. Force the Windows build in SteamCMD.
docker volume create enshrouded_files docker run --rm -v enshrouded_files:/data steamcmd/steamcmd:latest \ +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir /data \ +login anonymous +app_info_update 1 +app_update 2278520 validate +quit docker run --rm -v enshrouded_files:/data alpine chown -R 1000:1000 /dataRun
Exact bench command. Add
-p15637:15637/udp to publish the port.docker run -d --name enshrouded --memory 12g \ -v enshrouded_files:/enshrouded -w /enshrouded \ wine_runtime wine ./enshrouded_server.exeReady line
Ready line per Keen's FAQ. Seen 5.4 seconds after container start.
docker logs -f enshrouded | grep -m1 "HostOnline' (up)"Passwords and settings
First start writes enshrouded_server.json with a random password per user group.
docker stop enshrouded docker run --rm -it -v enshrouded_files:/e alpine vi /e/enshrouded_server.json docker start enshrouded
Settings
13 settings
File: enshrouded_server.json next to the server exe. Stop the server before editing.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
"name": "Enshrouded Server" | Name in the server list, visible to every player. Keen asks for a non-offensive name. |
"saveDirectory": "./savegame" | World save folder, relative to the server exe. |
"logDirectory": "./logs" | Current log folder; older logs move to logs/backup. |
"ip": "0.0.0.0" | Listen address. Change only on a machine with several addresses. |
"queryPort": 15637 | UDP port to forward. |
"slotCount": 16 | Player slots, 1 to 16. Each slot adds load; lower it if CPU or RAM is the bottleneck (Keen). |
"gameSettingsPreset": "Default" | Default, Relaxed, Hard, Survival or Custom. Custom uses gameSettings. |
"gameSettings": { ... } | About 35 values, such as enemyDamageFactor, dayTimeDuration and plantGrowthSpeedFactor. Custom preset only. |
"userGroups": [ ... ] | Admin, Friend, Guest and Visitor. Each has a password and permissions (kick and ban, inventories, world editing, base editing and extending). The password sets the group. |
"reservedSlots": 0 | Per group. Slots held for that group, such as admins, when the server is full. |
"enableVoiceChat": false | Voice chat. voiceChatMode: Proximity or Global. |
"enableTextChat": false | Text chat. |
"bannedAccounts": [] | Banned players' accounts. |
Troubleshooting
5 problems
- Password rejected
- Since Update 2, each user group has its own password, random in a fresh config. Use the group's password from userGroups in enshrouded_server.json; a lone "password" line is no longer used, except to make a single "default" group.
- Server missing from the in-game list
- Turn on the dedicated server filter in the server browser (Keen's FAQ). Still missing: favorite it by IP in Steam (View, Game Servers, the plus button).
- 'DisplayVersion' error at startup under Wine
- Harmless. The server asks Windows for its version, Wine lacks that value, and startup continues normally.
- Port to forward: 15636 or 15637
- UDP 15637, the queryPort. Older guides add 15636; the current default config has no separate game port, and the bench server did not open 15636.
- World rollback
- Keen: each world keeps 10 numbered copies, made every 10 minutes and on shutdown; an
-indexfile's "latest" value (0 to 9) picks the active copy. Copy the whole savegame folder first. Bench: saves every 5 minutes, a new numbered copy every 10.
Method
build 23178631
| Server | Enshrouded dedicated server, Steam build 23178631, downloaded 2026-10-06. |
|---|---|
| Image | Debian 13 (trixie) with Wine 10.0 from Debian's own packages, run as a regular user (uid 1000); server files on a Docker volume. |
| Machine | AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, Proxmox VE 9, each game server in Docker inside a dedicated LXC container. 12 GB memory limit, no swap. |
| Command | wine ./enshrouded_server.exe |
Changes from defaults
- Wine on Linux. Keen supports only Windows; Windows numbers can differ.
- No settings changed: first start wrote enshrouded_server.json defaults, random password per user group.
- No open ports: on Steam's server list, but nobody could join.
